11th August 2020

With so much amazing cloud financial management activity happening this summer, we’re proud to announce International FinOps Day. Experience this special day for the first time ever, this August 20, 2020.

What’s going on?

We’re taking a moment (entire day actually) to celebrate our community and contributors for all of their daily hard work in building out the emerging profession of cloud finance management.

On August 20, 2020, we’ll acknowledge all this work by sharing best practices and tips at two key events.

We hope to see you all at one or both of the following:

The day before, on August 19, catch FinOps Foundation board member Joe Daly, from Nationwide, and FinOps ambassador Noel Crowley, from Fidelity, at an AWS Peer Connect event on Aug 19. It’s an open exchange of cloud finance management tips and tricks held by AWS.

Celebrate with some swag

We’re also excited to launch our new FinOps Foundation shop. Take a look at what we have in store and pick up something to celebrate this year’s event and the next ones, too.

Rate Optimization Series: An Aggressive Move to AWS Savings Plans

WHEN: August 20, 2020 at 1PM Pacific

NOTE: This event is for all active FinOps Foundation members. Not a member yet? Register here.

The FinOps Foundation is kicking off a three-part series on Rate Optimization strategies aptly titled ”Do you have reservations about commitments?” We’ll start with AWS Savings Plans! Google and Azure rate optimization best practice sessions will follow. We’ll also take a moment to recap all call members on cloud finance management-related KubeCon announcements.

Over the last seven months, Mike Fuller (Atlassian’s FinOps Lead & Principal Systems Engineer) has moved Atlassian’s massive legacy Reserved Instance estate to be exclusively on AWS Savings Plans. Now he’s analyzed massive amounts of Savings Plan and CUR data to see how savings are actually applied, measured their efficacy, then visualiz(s)ed those outputs for your viewing pleasure.

Come hear his learnings and conclusions from the journey. AWS’s Nathan Besh will be along to share an overview of how Savings Plans work and answer tough questions at the end.

Get ready to meet the FinOps Certified partners

Do you remember back in June at the Open Source Summit when we announced that we would be launching new FinOps Certified Platform, FinOps Certified Service Provider, and FinOps Training Partner programs? Those programs will be officially launching on Aug 20th. Join either of our events that day to hear who they are!

Spend some time with the community during this brand new holiday

Like any new tradition, it’ll take a few rounds of practice to get it right. The first step is to join up and get involved however you can: like discussing best practices on Slack or contributing to the open source FInOps repository. If you can make one or more of the events and talk shop on Slack, even better.

That was a lot, so here’s a recap of how to celebrate:

We look forward to seeing everyone during this first International FinOps Day.
