AI Tokenomics is the discipline of converting energy and capital into AI capabilities and efficiently consuming that intelligence across the organization to realize measurable business value. As the Tokenomics Foundation defines it, the work spans three stages: production (turning energy and capital into tokens), consumption (using that intelligence well through model selection, routing, caching, and forecasting), and value (what the output is worth to the business). Tokens are the most visible and easily metered part of the bill, but Tokenomics covers the total cost of AI, including infrastructure, software, and labor. The term is unrelated to its crypto usage; here, a token is the atomic unit of AI.
Proving that value is the hard part. In the September 2026 State of Tokenomics survey of 472 organizations, 43 percent named proving value or return on investment as their top challenge, and nearly three in four could not confidently connect AI spend to an outcome their CFO would accept.
Within the FinOps Framework, Tokenomics sits alongside AI Value and AI for FinOps, and the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) adds support for AI and token costs in v1.5. The Tokenomics Foundation, a Linux Foundation project, brings the largest AI consumers together with hardware, model, cloud, and inference providers to build vendor-neutral specifications and shared language. Its working groups have published The Seven-Layer Tokenomics Stack, Big-T Notation, and a framework for classifying and measuring realized value from AI.
